Tsimandria

The name of the village appears that it emanated from phrase "sts mandres", that is to say "in the folds".
This version strengthens also the first written report of name that is "in-You-mandra" and is reduced in 1569, but also his insertion in documents of previous century with the form Tzimandra. This folds, that gave also the name of village, belonged in the metohj of M. Layras.
The A. Mihelis supports that was gifted from the Byzantine Imperor Ioannis Tsimiski's (925-976) to the monastery. According to this delivery then the metohi should be founded the 971, when the Mount Athos monks came in agreement with the I. Tsjmski and in any case before the 976, year of his death. Residues from this metohi are a devastated tower in the hill of Felonjkos, that other attribute in the Tsimiski and other in Alexjo B Komninos (1169-1184). Very probably it is the castle of Eladikos that is reported in monasterial documents by IV century (1180). Round this castle existed the metohi of Fern, as report the Kabsidelis - Komninos. This metohi is reported in 1321 with the name "the Pterin", as one of the 25 villages of Limnos that they constituted patriarchical. The A. Moshi'dis supports that the JD' of century was metohi of Saint Ioannis from Patmos, had vines, fields, garden, watermills, harbour and his temple was dedicated in the archangel Micheal. In 1858 the Conze him found devastated and deserted.
Near in the Tsimandria exists the place that named Diaporion, where in 1912 debarkated the men of Greek fleet and released the island. In the same point the alliance debarkated in 1944 turning away the Germans.
